Blend Modes:
When dealing with blend modes think of the colors on your layers as being made up of three parts:
* Base = color you start out with
* Blend = color you are adding to base (image or solid color)
* Result = color you get after mixing base with blend color
* Base = color you start out with

General Blend Modes:
* Normal – (default blend mode) does no blending at all. Pixels on top layer completely block what lies below
* Dissolve – turns semi-transparent pixels into a spray of dots
* Dissolve – turns semi-transparent pixels into a spray of dots
Darken Blend Modes:
* Darken – Any colors on top layer darker than colors below stay & lighters colors on bottom disappear. (Can use to help eliminate white background)
* Multiply – Base coat is multiplied by blend color. Can be used to correct exposure or knock out white area from top layer.
*Color Burn – Darkens your image by increasing the overall contrast. When used on 50% gray, it intensifies color on layer below.
*Linear Burn – Combination of Multiply and Color Burn. Darkens your image by decreasing brightness and creating the most contrast.
* Multiply – Base coat is multiplied by blend color. Can be used to correct exposure or knock out white area from top layer.
*Color Burn – Darkens your image by increasing the overall contrast. When used on 50% gray, it intensifies color on layer below.
*Linear Burn – Combination of Multiply and Color Burn. Darkens your image by decreasing brightness and creating the most contrast.
Lighten Blend Modes:
* Lighten – All colors compared and the lightest from both the base and blend create new result. Can be used to help remove black background.
* Screen – multiplies the opposite of the blend and base colors making everything lighter as though bleached.
* Color Dodge – Lightens your image by decreasing contrast. Turns light pixels white but keeps black pixels. Can use with 50% gray to brighten your image. Great way to give hair highlights.
* Linear Dodge – Combo of Screen & Color Dodge that lightens image. All light colors are turned white.
* Lighter Color – Base & Blend colors compared and only lightest pixels are kept.
* Screen – multiplies the opposite of the blend and base colors making everything lighter as though bleached.

* Vivid Light – Applies Color Burn to increase contrast of colors darker than 50% gray & Color Dodge to decrease the contrast of colors lighter than 50% gray. Can make an image pop and add texture.

* Difference – Analyzes brightness of both Base & blend colors and subtracts the brightest pixels.
* Exclusion – Similar to difference but with less contrast. Blending with white inverts base color and blending with black doesn’t do anything.

These modes relate to color and luminance and can be used to change, add, or intensify color in image.
* Hue – Keeps lightness and saturation of base color and adds hue of the blend color. Use to change an objects color without changing lightness or darkness but understand you can’t introduce a color that isn’t in the blend layer.
* Saturation – Keeps the luminance and hue of the base color and picks up saturation of the blend color. Can be used to drain color from part of image by painting area with black.
* Color – Luminance of base color kept and hue and saturation from the blend color is picked up. Can be used to color a grayscale image.
* Luminosity – Keeps the base color’s hue and saturation and picks up the blend colors luminance.
